You will need good co-ordination between hands, and independence of fingers. You should have completed Piano level 4 or be of equivalent confidence, i.e. be able to read notation, fluent in major and minor scales, and understand basic chords and their construction. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
You will be taught in a keyboards room with each student at a digital piano. Exercises and tunes (accompaniment) rehearsed and played as a group. Playing together is vital to this style of keyboard playing (imitating a band situation). Listening to examples. Your own practice between classes will be essential if you are to progress.
Manuscript pad and file for class music is required, and a pencil and eraser. Bring a machine to record class if you wish.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Self-assessment is continuous as students play in class and develop the ability to cope with keyboard parts. Some performing as piano duos toward the end of the course.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
