Course outline

What is the course about?

Develop playing and harmony from levels 1 and 2 and improve rhythmic response and coordination of hands. You will find ways of playing songs and adding keyboard parts, and provide piano accompaniment to the singer(s) of songs.

What topics will we cover?

- Rehearsal of practice rountines involving chords I-VII in major keys
- Cycle of fifths - exercises in all keys
- Patterns and typical rhythms
- Improvisation
- Common chord progressions
- Playing by ear; reading chord charts and learning songs
- Harmony in a minor key and modal harmony.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Read and interpret chord symbols with confidence
- Increase your repertoire of songs, including ability to transpose
- Improve your arrangements/chord voicing/bass line invention, inclusion of passing notes
- Understand harmony as applied to pop songs and simple jazz styles
- Learn to operate within styles like rock ballad, reggae, funk.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Pop piano 2, and show competence at that level, particularly the ability to play all chords and modes found in the keys of C, F, Bb, G, D, A and E major. You will be able to copy notated examples in class, and read musical samples provided by the tutor. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Mostly the class will play together: all students are at a digital piano. Some solo playing, some duets. Backing tracks may be used. Listening to musical examples, discussion, homework assigments and regular practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring manuscript, pencil, eraser, and a folder for your class music. Machine to record parts of your class if you wish.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Peer assessment week to week. Opportunity to play solo in class, or as a pair. Tutor assessment on a more formal basis at end of the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
