Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a follow-on course to the level 1 workshop. Our aim is to produce confident, capable, good sounding vocalists in the fields of rock, pop and soul. To improve your singing and breath control through weekly singing workout. To encourage you towards personal interpretations of songs and to gain confidence in solo performance.

What topics will we cover?

- Weekly group singing exercises for agility, range, pitching and breathing technique.
- Ear training and harmonising.
- Microphone technique.
- Mainly solo performances by students (free choice of repertoire).
- Some new material (variety of styles) provided by the tutor.
.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- sing with ease and confidence in public
- know the range and limitations of your voice, and suitable styles and keys for songs
- be familiar with a range of vocal exercises to improve singing and breathing technique
- know how to transpose a chord chart
- increase your repertoire with songs provided by the tutor
- have experience of singing with a microphone
- have improved expressive, rhythm and improvisation skills.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need experience as a singer, a good musical ear and a good sense of rhythm. You should be prepared to sing in front of the class with piano accompaniment or backing tracks. You will be expected to sing from memory and be open to discussion and constructive criticism. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Occasional demonstrations of new material provided by the tutor. Mainly solo performances of personal material, constructive criticism and discussion. Weekly singing workout for all students.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Own personal repertoire (sheet music, chord sheets and photocopies for the pianist); suitable backing tracks provided by the student. A personal walkman to record sessions for practice purposes is of great advantage. Please bring a folder for photocopies provided by the tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Students perform solos and are assessed informally week by week. There will be occasional formal shows, e.g. at the end of your course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
