Learn basic rhythmic patterns and knowledge of tabla and its sounds. Learn to accompany in Indian music, by playing rhythmic patterns and improvisations.
- Introduction to the tabla - what it is and how it is made
- History and origins of tabla - great maestros of tabla, past and present and the different schools of tabla
- How to tune and what is used for tuning
- Pulse and rhythm - ways to apply rhythm in daily life
- Correct hand exercises, finger placement, striking area
- The language of tabla (reciting of Boles) phonetic sounds
- Basic note articulation
- Rudiments of tabla : what are kaydhas,paltas, relas, tuctads and tihais, and why we play them
- Learning to speak the language and keep time for a given time cycle. Writing notation
- Exploring different time cycles : 16, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6 and 4 beat cycles.
- Demonstrate basic skills and techniques of playing tabla
- Recite tabla taals with pattern variations
- Demonstrate the ability to accompany in tabla with other music
- Demonstrate a broader understanding of tabla.
This course is designed for beginners. City Lit supply some tabla, but you are expected to acquire your own drums shortly after beginning the course so you can practise outside of class. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
Lecture and demonstration, playing together, reciting rhythms, individual training and guidance.
The City Lit can provide some drums.
Examinations are set in Indian music and students can seek guidance from tutor. Students are encouraged to acquire a pair of tabla for home practice - guidance available from tutor.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Practical tests during class and sessions of playing tabla.
