Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a one-year accredited course where you will learn skills in general musicianship, improvisation, harmony, composition and performance. As this is an Access Course into Higher Education students will be required to achieve credits in study skills and other units which support achievement of the Access Diploma. There is further detailed information in the pre-course information leaflet which can be obtained from the Music Department.

What topics will we cover?

The course will cover the requirements of each module that forms part of the course as accredited by OCN. The modules include performance/composing, musicianship, other subject modules such as Music Technology, and a choice of study skills units. You will also develop skills in essay writing and managing and improving your own learning.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Achieve the necessary practical and theoretical skills required for this course within the structured module unit list - musicianship, composing, performance, other subject modules and study skills. You will gain OCNLR credits and an Access to HE Diploma. For more information regarding the achievement of credits, please refer to the pre-course leaflet available from the Music Department.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to be at grade 5 theory level or an equivalent level. You will need to play an instrument or sing at grade 5 level or higher. Entry assessment: you will be given a written paper testing their theoretical skills (circa grade 5), an aural test, a short harmony exercise and a essay based on a musical extract. You should prepare a piece to perform on your instrument/voice. You will need to be able to communicate information and ideas clearly and effectively in writing. You should also be prepared to contribute to discussion and be able to work in a group. An interview will follow and the content of the course discussed with the course tutor/s.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a variety of ways which include group work, practical work, written work, research and problem solving. Students will be continually assessed during the course. In order to support you with the preparation of the UCAS form, there will be one-to-one tutorials. Along with tutorial support, study skills support is integrated within the course and will enable you to develop the appropriate skills necessary in completing written assignments and in preparing application forms for Higher Education and other professional courses.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to purchase workbooks and other course resources. The booklist will be given at the start of term.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will get detailed written feedback from your tutors on the work you hand in, and will also be able to discuss your progress on a one-to-one basis with your tutors. The work you complete during the year will be assessed and you will gain credits which count towards your Access Diploma.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
