Course outline

What is the course about?

It’s a hundred years since Stravinsky began sketching out that iconoclastic work The Rite of Spring. But this was just the first of many ground breaking works that Stravinsky was to produce during his 60 years at the forefront of modern music. Come and explore the life and work of this extraordinary modernist.
No previous musical knowledge necessary.

What topics will we cover?

The course will focus on certain key works in Stravinsky’s output, placing them in their appropriate context, historically and musically, and analysing them in terms of their musical style and content.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify the key stages in Stravinsky’s life
- Identify the ideas – both musical and non-musical - that influenced Stravinsky throughout his career
- Identify the formal, harmonic and melodic characteristics of certain key works by Stravinsky.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge necessary.You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures, listening, discussions.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
