Course outline

What is the course about?

To give you a greater understanding and appreciation of Brahms’s music – both the ideas that lie behind the works and the ideas contained within.

What topics will we cover?

The course will focus on certain key works in Brahm’s output, placing them in their appropriate context, historically and musically, and analysing them in terms of their musical style and content.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify the key stages in Brahms’s life
- Identify the ideas – both musical and non-musical - that influenced Brahms throughout his career
- Identify the formal, harmonic and melodic characteristics of certain key orchestral works by Mahler.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge or experience needed.You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures, listening, discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
