What is the course about?

This is a beginner's guide to classical music, which aims to give you an understanding of how Western classical music works and how it has developed from the 9th century to the present day.

What topics will we cover?

- Chronological study of classical music, starting with the origins of plainchant (chants) and ending with the most recent compositions of today.

- Emphasis will be placed on understanding the historical and musical context of a range of music.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand the elements of music (melody, rhythm, harmony)
- Give a general historical overview of the development of Western classical music
- Talk about certain composers and specific works from each historical period
- Understand how each composer adapted the elements of music to create an individual musical style and how this helped further the evolution of classical music
- Enjoy listening to music with greater awareness.
