This is a beginner's guide to classical music, which aims to give you an understanding of how Western classical music works and how it has developed from the 9th century to the present day.
- Chronological study of classical music, starting with the origins of plainchant (chants) and ending with the most recent compositions of today.
- Specific composers and works from a range of periods.
- Emphasis will be placed on understanding the historical and musical context of a range of music.
- Understand the elements of music (melody, rhythm, harmony)
- Give a general historical overview of the development of Western classical music
- Talk about certain composers and specific works from each historical period
- Understand how each composer adapted the elements of music to create an individual musical style and how this helped further the evolution of classical music
- Enjoy listening to music with greater awareness.
No previous knowledge or experience required.You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English.

You may wish to bring a notepad and pen. Opportunities to attend concerts at reduced rates may arise during the year (approximate ticket price - £3-6 per concert).
