Course outline

What is the course about?

To encourage a love of opera and to help you understand the historical, literary and musical background of each individual work. Operas included in the course will be performed at a leading opera venue during the season, which you can attend if you wish.

What topics will we cover?

- The historical contexts of the operas
- The literary and musical background of the operas.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand and appreciate the operas
- place the operas in their historical contexts
- have a clear image of the plots of the two operas.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge or experience required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Audio-visual and pianistic illustrations, occasionally visiting singers and visits to the opera.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
