Course outline

What is the course about?

To provide a greater understanding of the this wonderful work by Schumann. We will be discussing the life and work of both men and the more general influence that Hoffmann's writing had upon both Schumann's composing and music journalism.

What topics will we cover?

We will listen to and discuss the literary context within this work, whilst reflecting on the contributions and reactions of the work in its musical and historical context. We will also explore the general influence that Hoffmann's writing had upon both Schumann's composing and music journalism.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Better understand and appreciate Schumann's work Kriesleriana and the influences that Hoffman's literary skills had on Schumann's composing and journalism.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for all levels. No particular skills are required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through listening, visual aids, lecture and discussion.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
