Course outline

What is the course about?

The talk focuses on contemporary music for film, with an exciting selection of brand new scores for silent films new and old, as well as the music of Schoenberg and George Benjamin, one of the foremost British contemporary composers. We shall discuss the music and attend a live performance (with film screenings) by the Ensemble Amorpha at 8pm.

What topics will we cover?

The talk considers the role of film music, and explores the idioms of the programmed composers including Schoenberg’s Accompaniment to a Film-Scene and George Benjamin’s Piano Figures. Alongside René Clair’s 1924 modernist masterpiece Entr’acte, with new music by Luke Styles, the concert by the Ensemble Amorpha features new scores, for contemporary silent films, by Alwyn Westbrooke and Damon Lee.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-Be more familiar with the works of Schoenberg, George Benjamin and some brand new film music.
-Appreciate more deeply the experience of live musical performance.
-Enjoy the stimulus of one of Europe’s major cultural centres.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

General music appreciation. No previous knowledge or experience is required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
