Course outline

What is the course about?

For all those interested in seeing how music and literature interact. The course will look in detail at Pushkin’s work and will then explore how Tchaikovsky interpreted it to create his opera.

What topics will we cover?

The aim of the course is to provide students with a greater understanding of the relationship between Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin and Tchaikovsky’s opera.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the main ideas contained within Eugene Onegin
• Demonstrate an understanding of the formal, melodic and harmonic characteristics of the opera by Tchaikovsky
• Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the two works.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge or experience needed.You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures, listening, discussions.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. On-going group discussion and summary of wider listening opportunities.
