Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an overview of the main features of Live. Record, arrange and mix musical ideas. Import loops and samples and create musical ideas from scratch using virtual instruments all in two days flat.

What topics will we cover?

- The 'Session' view as musical 'sketchpad' and DJ performance tool
- The 'Arrange' view and its editing functions to structure your compositions
- 'Warping' to apply time-stretching to audio samples
- An introduction to effects and processors
- An introduction to automation in the mixer, instruments and effects
- Recording both audio and MIDI.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use the 'Session' view as musical 'sketchpad' and DJ performance tool
- Use the 'Arrange' view and its editing functions to structure your compositions
- Use 'Warping' to apply time-stretching to audio samples
- Demonstrate creative and appropriate use of devices such as compression and delay
- Demonstrate how the mixer, instruments and effects might be controlled via remote automation
- Record both audio and MIDI into Live in both session and arrange views.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Ideal if you are a beginner, this course is aimed at anyone who wishes to learn how to put this exciting technology to creative use. No prior experience of music sequencing necessary, however some familiarity with computers would be beneficial. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classes will generally begin with a demonstration and discussion followed by practical work. You will work on one of 10 Mac based workstations to practice set themes, techniques and skills, applying these to your developing ideas and material and you will regularly present your work in progress to the group. You will receive regular support, encouragement and feedback from your tutor throughout the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

CDrs can be bought for saving your work (£0.50) or students may bring in USB flash drives to back up their work for use elsewhere. Students should always bring a note pad and pen.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will save each session's work as new files, providing a record of your progress. You may request written feedback from the tutor at the end of the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

There is a direct follow-on course, 'Ableton Live plus: advanced techniques' although you may want to take our full length 'Making music with Ableton Live' course first.
