Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a three-day course aimed at giving composers, music producers and sound designers the practical and technical skills required for creating music for film. The course is taught with Logic Pro.

What topics will we cover?

- Spotting the film
- Composing themes
- Creating instrumental and sound palettes
- Synchronization issues
- Deliverables
- Converting and importing/ exporting films
- Film formats
- Types of scoring
- Creating a showreel.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Create a temp track
- Understand the considerations for creating a strong theme
- Create an instrumental and sound palette
- Convert, import and export films
- Bounce music and add it to a film
- Describe the elements required in a showreel.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course will be taught on Logic Pro and is aimed at people who have at least a basic working knowledge of the program as there will not be time to be teaching the basics of the software. It is not necessary that people can compose music as some people may wish to explore sound design rather than music.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classes will generally begin with a demonstration and discussion followed by practical work. You will work on one of 10 Mac based workstations to practice set themes, techniques and skills, applying these to your developing ideas and material and you will regularly present your work in progress to the group. You will receive regular support, encouragement and feedback from your tutor throughout the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

CDrs can be bought for saving your work (£0.50) or students may bring in USB flash drives to back up their work for use elsewhere. Students should always bring a note pad and pen. If people use manuscript paper as part of their composing process, they should bring their own.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will save each week's work as new files, providing a record of your progress. You may request written feedback from the tutor at the end of the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
