What is the course about?

This course enables instrumentalists and vocalists to work towards the teaching examination ATCL as set out by Trinity College London. In exceptional cases you might be able to join the course during the academic year.

What topics will we cover?

The course will support units 1 and 2 which are components of the ATCL instrumental/vocal examination. Please refer to the Trinity College Syllabus available on the Trinity College London website (www.trinityguildhall.co.uk).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Ttake the examination ATCL for instrumental/vocal teaching as set out by TCL
• Demonstrate a good verbal command of English when communicating subject knowledge in presentations and in micro-teaching tasks
• Demonstrate critical skills in asserting judgements in one's teaching practice
• Follow discussions about instrumental/vocal teaching practice and make contributions using appropriate language and knowledge of their subject area
• Demonstrate in writing knowledge and awareness of musical styles, performance events and teaching environments
• Demonstrate in writing effective planning and investigation of materials to suit different purposes
• Write structural essays using correct grammar and punctuation
• Be able to integrate a range of material into the learning process in a manner which demonstrates contextual awareness.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be able to
• Demonstrate competency on their instrument/voice to Grade 8 standard or an equivalent level
• Demonstrate a good verbal command of English when communicating subject knowledge in presentations
• Follow discussions about instrumental/vocal teaching practice and make relevant contributions using appropriate language
• Read and summarise a range of material and write structural essays using correct grammar and punctuation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through lectures, workshops, discussions, practical and group work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will be expected to purchase core textbooks as well as the examination fees to Trinity College London for each unit. Trinity's suggested booklist will be provided to students at the beginning of the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will get regular tutorials and the monitoring of written work during the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

Progression to an LTCL qualification. Joining other advanced courses at City Lit or elsewhere is encouraged.
