To give practice time and consideration to aural skills.
Practise of intervals, rhythms, and recognition of form and quality of sound. Involves singing, writing musical examples, clapping, active listening, and developing the short-term memory for musical fragments.
- hear quality and size of basic intervals, and explore them within the major scale.
- hear the major or minor quality of chords.
- discern time signature, on-beat and off-beat rhythms.
- be more confident about recognising what you hear.
Experience of playing is essential, and basic reading skills will be expected. No formal ear training is expected: this course will provide such a basis. Useful as a refresher, though, for students who have done ear training courses.
- Listening, singing, writing examples of rhythm/melody.
- Intensive practice of intervals.
- Listening to and appraising recorded music.
You may record the classes, or bring a blank cassette if you do not possess equipment to record.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Recognition tests and transcription exercises.
