A one day intermediate/advanced contemporary music workshop for instrumentalists, vocalists and composers who have existing work they wish to showcase, extend or refine. For those who have a good understanding of classical composition and wish to explore more contemporary composing techniques. Receive constructive advice and learn more about compositional devices, instrumentation and notation. Look at your own work from a different perspective to help keep your compositions fresh and original. Instrumentalists will need Grade 5 equivalent and composers will need to have attended the City Lit course ‘Composing for Beginners/Instruments/Singers’ or equivalent.
- Analysis of your original existing chamber instrumental or vocal work
- How to edit and structure your work
- Using contemporary composing techniques to extend and vary your work
- Improving notation of your scores by rehearsal and performance of your work during the workshop (where appropriate)
- How to give and receive constructive feedback
- Effective instrumentation
- Using graphic notation to sketch out concepts, ideas, structures or improvements.
- Effectively analyse your own work for future edtditing or extension of material
- Give and receive constructive feedback
- Demonstrate an awareness of how to use texture & timbre to create effective instrumentation
- Collaborate with others to generate, structure, and edit musical themes and ideas
- Hear your work (if appropriate instrumentalists are available in class) performed or rehearsed
- Produce clear traditional or graphic notation for instrumentalists or singers to perform.
You will need to have either Grade 5 Music Theory or attended an equivalent course at City Lit.
It is preferable that you have the equivalent of Grade 5 in an instrument or voice and have experience in score and sight reading. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English and staff notation.
The emphasis is on practical work in class. You will be asked to complete homework to show in class.
Please bring a short example (no longer than 3 minutes) of your existing work – either Chamber or Vocal with a clearly written score and parts for the instrumentalists and singers. Or you may bring a recording of your work with a score if you do not wish to have your work performed. Please bring your instrument with you. Also bring manuscript paper, notebook, pencil, rubber.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
