Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims to enable students to achieve a successful result in the Grade Theory exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). The Grade V theory is a requisite level to enter for Grade VI practical exams and above and is also a recognized access level for various diplomas and degrees.

What topics will we cover?

The course will cover all the required aspects of the Graded syllabus for Grades 3-5, including time signatures, scales and keys, ornamentation, score notation, intervals, melody writing and word setting, general musical questions and any related issues.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Have a good working knowledge of the various topics which are included in the Theory Grades 3-5
- Have sufficient preparation towards achieving Grades 3, 4 or 5.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be at Grade 2 theory level or an equivalent level. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English and staff notation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be classes devoted to particular topics in the Theory syllabus. Classes will include working examples with guidance from the tutor, for the whole class, in small groups and with one to one tuition. Homework will be set, marked and discussed to provide necessary practice and feedback. Textbooks used will include the Grade V Theory workbooks produced by the ABRSM, the Eric Taylor Guide to Music Theory, past papers, and related material focusing on specific techniques.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The ABRSM, Grade V workbook and manuscript paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
