To consolidate an understanding of how music works and the symbols of notation used for it. This course is the third part of a year of training.
- Exploring syncopation and articulation in rhythm. Notation of swing rhythm.
- Introduction to the use of triplets and compound time signatures e.g. 6/8.
- Identifying and writing melodies and bass lines.
- Developing your ability to read and write notation including ledger lines
- Introducing harmonic sounds: chords and cadences.

- understand basic musical forms.
Students need to have completed Sounds and symbols 2 or command a similar knowledge of musical structures like major and minor scales, intervals, to be familiar with the keys of C, G, D, F and Bb; dotted and tied rhythms. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English and staff notation.
Emphasis on practical execution of ideas.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Continuous assessment of written and practical homework.
