- Rhythmic perception comes first and the theory will follow
- Playing by ear, reading and writing rhythm and identifying time signatures and rhythms will be explored through active listening
- Playing activities will include keeping the pulse, on/off beat rhythms, syncopation, cross rhythms.
- Demonstrate a heightened aural awareness of rhythm
- Demonstrate an improved confidence in playing rhythm and keeping good time
- Develop understanding of theoretical concerns around rhythm
- Develop your reading and writing skills.
You should already have basic musicianship skills and need to be able to sing or play an instrument. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English and staff notation.
Sessions will be participatory and experiential. Activities will include conducting, dictation, composition, playing by ear, reading notation and playing percussion. This particular short course will take place in the keyboard room.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. By the end of the course we can assess improved ability to play and react to time and rhythm in the usual class tasks which involve performance/demonstration of skills.

This course will provide a good grounding to go into sight singing, musicianship and aural perception courses, and any instrumental class.
