Course outline

What is the course about?

Improve your sigh-singing and harmony. This course is ideal for singers and instrumentalists of a good intermediate standard.

What topics will we cover?

- Sight singing, ear training, study of harmony, improvisation
- Working with a variety of musical styles (known tunes and obscure, also original material), accompanied and a cappella
- What to prepare and how to practice between classes.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate improved sight singing skills
- Demonstrate the ability to hold a harmony part
- Develop relative pitch and ability to sing and recognise any interval and basic chord types
- Demonstrate a good working knowledge of diatonic harmony
- Demonstrate experience of writing melodies, and improved ability to write down what you hear
- improvise with confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need music reading and writing skills and confidence in singing; an understanding of basic harmony (major and minor triads), and aural understanding commensurate with completion of Vocal musicianship level 1. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English and staff notation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through mostly large group work - singing music written on the whiteboard or worksheets, or following the piano.Regular practice of intervals. Some singing in trios or quartets. Occasional solo singing. Students are required to be more independent at this level than Vocal musicianship level 1. Some homework will be expected of you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring manuscript paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will also get feedback from presentations in class, written homework assignments and through discussion of strategies and resources.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
