Course outline

What is the course about?

To improve technique and command of tone colour and sonority. To enhance interpretative resourcefulness. To practise more effectively. To improve projection and the ability to communicate with an audience. To improve students own teaching skills. Students are expected to practice at least 1.5 hours a day.

What topics will we cover?

- Coverage of a wide range of piano literature with reference to individual commitments such as exams, concerts, teaching and lecturing of each student.
- Discussion and comparison of different practice and teaching methods.
- Analysis and study technique in depth.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- have solid technique and thorough understanding of physiological phenomena to bring this about
- have enhanced understanding of the works played
- communicate this enhanced musical understanding to an audience
- have strong listening skills and aural perceptiveness
- have more independent capacity to make telling and significant interpretative decisions by placing the works they play in a stylistic/aesthetic and historical context.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be post Grade 8, preferably diploma standard, and should ideally have had previous performing experience. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work, discussion and exchange of ideas/suggestions between different members of class as well as direct comments. Demonstrations on piano by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Music purchased from music shops or obtained from the library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Class concerts; public recitals at the City Lit and outside; acquisition of diplomas etc.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

It is appropriate at this level to re-enrol in the course. As much experience of playing in public as possible with recitals by class members organised both inside and outside the City Lit. Preparation for further diplomas.
