To introduce students to the keyboard and teach basic keyboard skills within a five finger pattern. To teach reading of music, treble and bass clef and to understand basic simple time rhythmic patterns. To make them aurally aware of everything they learn. Students are expected to practice at least 15 minutes a day.
- Keyboard geography.
- How music is written. The stave, note names, clefs - treble and bass. Reading by shape, interval and pattern.
- Aural awareness of pitch - high/low, intervals, its relation to the keyboard.
- Rhythmic values, time signatures and rests.

- read and play a tune of at least 8 bars in either the bass or treble clef
- understand basic rhythmic symbols and realise simple rhythmic patterns
- play a short tune with some left hand supporting notes.
This course is for complete beginners (people who have never played before): no experience is needed. If you have some experience of playing piano, perhaps gained a long time ago, you may wish to come along to a music advice session where we will ensure that you enrol on a course that matches your level of knowledge. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
Group work. Tutor demonstration. Practical classes with aural work to back up all theoretical study.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Informal verbal feedback by tutor. Peer assessment. There will be a termly progress check, based on material covered during the course.
