Course outline

What is the course about?

To introduce students to the keyboard and teach basic keyboard skills within a five finger pattern. To teach reading of music, treble and bass clef and to understand basic simple time rhythmic patterns. To make them aurally aware of everything they learn. Students are expected to practice at least 15 minutes a day.

What topics will we cover?

- Keyboard geography.
- How music is written. The stave, note names, clefs - treble and bass. Reading by shape, interval and pattern.
- Aural awareness of pitch - high/low, intervals, its relation to the keyboard.
- Rhythmic values, time signatures and rests.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- read music at least within 2 octaves
- play at least one complete piece from the course repertoire for the term
- play at least 2 major scales played by one hand at a time
- remember and perform melodies or rhythms played by tutor of up to 2 bars in length
- co-ordinate hands together using single notes and simple chords in left hand in left hand.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for complete beginners (people who have never played before): no experience is needed. If you have some experience of playing piano, perhaps gained a long time ago, you may wish to come along to a music advice session where we will ensure that you enrol on a course that matches your level of knowledge. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work. Tutor demonstration. Practical classes with aural back up to all theoretical study.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Keyboard for practice between classes. Material written and provided by tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Informal verbal feedback by tutor. Peer assessment. There will be a termly progress check, based on material covered during the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
