Course outline

What is the course about?

Increase your fluency at the keyboard and develop ability to recognise patterns and shapes. You will extend your aural and keyboard skills to match increasing fluency and understanding.

What topics will we cover?

- Harmonisation of melody
- Work on co-ordination
- More work on scale and chord patterns. Improvising and transposing in each new key learnt
- Extension and consolidation of rhythmic work.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Improvise a simple 4 bar melody
- Harmonise a short melody with simple chords
- Play confidently without music.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed Piano level 1. A basic knowledge of key centres and chords is essential. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group, pair and individual work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Tutor provides material.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Continual informal verbal feedback.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
