Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a practical class which explores music of Chopin and other composers such as Liszt, Schumann and others. It aims to make you see the music by these composers in the bigger stylistic concept of the big romantic period while at the same time helping you to focus on particular details to achieve a successful performance of the particular works.

What topics will we cover?

A variety of pieces by Chopin and his contemporaries.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-Have more in depth understanding of the music of this particular period.
-Be able to execute particular articulation needed for the romantic style.
-Be able to produce better structure.
-Make informed pedalling decisions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Level 6 is a minimum standard. You will need to follow written and verbal instruction in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Individual performances, Tutor demonstration. Group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring along a copy of the music you are playing.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Students are encouraged to take notes. Tutor will give verbal feedback.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
