The course aims to achieve greater fluency at the keyboard in terms of eye-hand co-ordination, reading, keyboard harmony. To explore rhythmic vocabulary and basic dynamics. To be able to recognise and play chords I, IV and V in major keys and extend knowledge of both major and minor keys. Students need to practice a minimum of 30 minutes a day.
- Extending work on rhythmical patterns.
- Developing legato technique.
- Development of finger staccato.
- Extending knowledge of keys and using them in practical application i.e. pieces, studies. The harmonising of simple melodies.
- Playing repertoire in a range of styles.
- Aural work; keyboard harmony developed alongside playing and theoretical work.
- Working on different chord positions (inversions).
- play and recognise basic I, IV and V chords in major keys
- play 3 major and 1 minor scale and arpeggios 1 octave hands separately
- play and recognise forte and piano sounds
- play with finger staccato
- play melodic line with reasonable legato technique

Students will require a minimum standard of Grade 2 or 3 years' playing experience. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

Students should have a keyboard for home practise. Material written and supplied by tutor. One or two printed books as decided by the students (approx. cost £10 each).

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. End of term informal concert - performing two pieces. Continual informal verbal feedback by tutor. Peer assessment.
