Course outline

What is the course about?

The aim of the course is to increase fluency at the keyboard, develop hand/eye co-ordination and the ability to recognise patterns and shapes. Begin to work on playing hands together regularly. To extend range outside 5-finger position - develop confidence at keyboard over wider range. Toe extend aural and keyboard skills to match increasing fluency and understanding. To increase ability to evaluate a piece of music for yourself and to recognise mistakes in the playing of others as an aid to effective practice. Students are expected to practice at least 20 minutes a day.

What topics will we cover?

- Work on co-ordination. Aim to increase fluency of reading at sight without looking down at keyboard.
- More work on shapes and patterns. Introduction of scale and chord pattern.
- Extension and consolidation of rhythmic work. Familiarity with 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and on common rhythmic patterns within these time signatures.
- Development of sight-reading skills up to interval of 5th.
- Aim to develop your aural ability to accurately identify mistakes made in the playing of others and then hopefully in your own playing.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- read music at least within 2 octaves
- play at least one complete piece from the course repertoire for the term
- play at least 2 major scales played by one hand at a time
- remember and perform melodies or rhythms played by tutor of up to 2 bars in length
- co-ordinate hands together using single notes and simple chords in left hand in left hand.
