Course outline

What is the course about?

This short course for pianists, instrumentalists and singers, will give you the opportunity to make music with other musicians. You will explore a selection of accompanying repertoire including songs and pieces for different instruments to be performed each week within the group. You will be able to broaden your knowledge of the art of accompaniment and will get a chance to improve your playing skills by accompanying visiting soloists (singers and instrumentalists).

What topics will we cover?

There will be works for different instruments and voice with piano accompaniment. The choice of repertoire will be discussed with the tutor.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Improve your performance skills
- Improve your sight-reading skills
- Develop your ensemble skills.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be at Grade 6 or higher with good sight-reading skills. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will rehearse with your peer and perform to the group each week. A practice room will be availble to each group. The tutor will give feedback to each gorup during the session. There will be an opportunity for the tutor and students to make comments about each performance. Practice in between sessions is essential.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You might need to buy or borrow some music.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
