To give you help with forming concert programmes and in putting together a recital programme which is suitable for your voice and will also satisfy a prospective audience.
Vocal and physical exercises.
Guidance on technical improvement with reference to vocal colour and tone.
Broadening of individual repertoire and guidance on its suitability for a recital.
Communicating with an audience.
Help with constructive criticism in order to gain a better understanding of the voice.
In-depth study of the chosen repertoire.
Perform to a reasonable standard from memory at least one group of songs from a full recital programme.
Demonstrate a vocal technique to show variations of tone and colour.
Choose suitable repertoire and to design a recital programme.
Show an enhanced understanding of the works studied.
Show an improvement in your listening skills and aural perceptiveness.
Critically evaluate vocal and performance technique in yourself and others.
You need:
- to have a reasonably sound vocal technique, having completed either the City Lit foundation levels up to intermediate 2, or have had a minimum of four years' individual tuition;
- to be confident singing in front of the class and have the ability to learn repertoire from memory regularly;
- a general understanding of musical notation, and an ability to read music;
- an ability to sing in various languages including English, French, German and Italian;
- to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
Time allowed for physical and vocal warm-up.
Group work, discussion and exchange of ideas/suggestions between tutor and class members.
Demonstration and lecture.
You will be expected to research and experiment with repertoire and to present it in class already prepared, and to practise for a minimum of one hour daily.
Note book and pencil, sheet music as required and perhaps a course book if required. You are encouraged to use the City Lit learning centre situated on the mezzanine level.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You need to arrange an audition time with the music office (see above).
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be advised on progression. There will be an end of year concert from which you will get further feedback.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
