Course outline

What is the course about?

To give operatic performance training and experience to singers. Please note that entry is by audition, not interview.

What topics will we cover?

Vocal coaching and guidance on technique, with reference to the operatic repertoire.
Broadening of individual repertoire and guidance on its suitability for either auditions or productions.
Stagecraft and the art of communicating with an audience.
Staged workshop performances.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Perform to a high enough standard, both as a singer and actor, to take part in the staged workshops;
Show a better understanding of the operatic repertoire and its suitability;
Demonstrate that you have an idea of what it means to work within the context of an opera company;
Show an independent capacity to make interpretative decisions by placing the excerpts in a stylistic context.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You must have had at least five years of vocal training as a classical singer.
You must be able to read music fluently and/or have the ability to learn repertoire quickly.
Consideration will be given to students' present vocal aptitude and musical abilities when casting for staged performances.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical group work, pair work, individual performances, tutor demonstration, constructive criticism and discussion. The course will include musical and interpretive coaching and stagecraft.

You will also be expected to perform in staged workshops, to prepare music and practise at least 1.5 hours a day.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to acquire copies of music to be studied during the year. Scores can usually be borrowed from local libraries.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will also be response to public performance of works studied.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to repeat this course or try the City Lit workshops 'Working towards performance' or 'Singing as Performance', to concentrate on the concert platform techniques. Alternatively you may like to progress to more specialised operatic training.
