To provide a bridge between the more technically oriented classes ('Basic technique for solo singing' and 'Develop your singing') and the workshops at Intermediate level and above.
Vocal and physical exercises and further guidance on technique.
Broadening of individual repertoire and guidance on its suitability.
Introduction to the German and/or French song repertoire.
Performance technique - the art of communicating with an audience.
Help with constructive criticism in order to gain a better understanding of the voice.
Perform the studied songs from memory, musically and accurately
Apply knowledge of suitable repertoire to your song choices.
Demonstrate a knowledge of what is required in order to sing and perform successfully.
Understand the value of critical evaluation in vocal and performance technique.
You need:
to have a reasonably sound vocal technique having completed 'Develop your singing' or equivalent (one year of one-to-one lessons);
to be reasonably confident singing in front of the class;
the ability to learn repertoire from memory on a regular basis;
a general understanding of musical notation, i.e. an ability to read music, but sight singing is not necessary
to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
Time allowed for a vocal warm-up. Group work, individual work and demonstration and lecture.
Discussion of topics arising out of work in progress.
Repertoire will be tutor led and may be in a variety of languages.
You are encouraged to practise for a minimum of 30 minutes daily.
A notebook and pencil, sheet music as required and perhaps a course book as advised. You are also encouraged to use the City Lit learning centre situated on the mezzanine level.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will advised on progression. There will also be an end of course concert providing further feedback.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

'Singing intermediate 1', another suitable singing workshop or a repetition of this level may prove beneficial.
