To improve upon vocal technique acquired on the course 'Basic technique for solo singing' or equivalent, and to allow you to start experimenting with repertoire and to discover how important this is with regard to acquiring a good vocal technique.
Vocal and physical exercises and the relationship between voice and body
Introduction to basic vocal repertoire in English and Italian.
Guidance in choosing repertoire
Basic presentation and performance skills.
Sing simple songs rhythmically and in tune from memory, using a more settled technique
Apply knowledge of suitable repertoire to your song choices
Apply good practice to your singing in order to sing successfully
Understand the value of critical evaluation in vocal and performance technique.
You will need:
to have completed a 'Basic technique for solo singing' course or equivalent;
a basic understanding of musical notation, i.e. key and time signatures, note values etc.;
an ability to learn a short song and sing it from memory, in front of a class;
-to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
Vocal exercises and songs which may be in a variety of languages, as a group and individually through tutor guided repertoire. You will improve your general understanding of singing through discussion arising from the practical work, via tutor and group feedback. There will be demonstration and lectures. You are encouraged to practise for a minimum of 15-20 minutes daily.
A note book and pencil for taking notes, sheet music as required and a course book as advised. You are also encouraged to use the City Lit learning centre situated on the mezzanine level.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will then be advised on progression. There may also be an end of year concert where you will get further feedback.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
