For students who have completed 'Music theatre 1' or have some music theatre experience. You will need to be able to learn new songs proposed by your tutor and present them from memory on a regular basis.

A workshop for singers and actors wanting to develop their vocal technique and performance skills in the music theatre repertoire. We will explore the appropriate voice qualities and varying styles required nowadays for music theatre, and work towards achieving and performing these in a healthy and efficient way.
Physical and vocal exercises and guidance on music theatre vocal techniques.
Broadening of individual repertoire and guidance on its suitability.
Communication with an audience.
Help with constructive criticism in order to gain a better understanding of the voice.
The technical demands of different vocal qualities and musical styles.
Perform to a reasonable standard, competently from memory, at least four numbers with the appropriate voice quality;
Choose appropriate repertoire;
Understand the varying vocal demands for different styles;
Have a broadened approach and more settled vocal technique for this type of repertoire.
You will need:
- to have a reasonably sound vocal technique having completed City Lit singing foundation courses, Music Theatre 1 or equivalent i.e. 3 years individual tuition, or have some experience in music theatre;
- to be confident singing in front of the class and have the ability to learn repertoire from memory regularly;
- a general understanding of musical notation, and an ability to read music (not necessarily fluently);
- to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
Practical workshop format with discussion and exchange of ideas arising out of work in progress.
Vocal warm-up and specific technical exercises.
You will be expected to bring in prepared repertoire of your choice, as well as working on repertoire recommended by your tutor.
You are expected to practise for a minimum of one hour daily.
Note book and pencil, sheet music as required and perhaps a course book if required. You are encouraged to use the City Lit learning centre situated on the mezzanine level.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be an end-of-year concert from which you will get further feedback.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
