An interactive exploration of the style, language and repertoire of Danish, Norwegian & Swedish vocal music. Students need to arrive at the first session with one song already musically prepared. This is for singers at intermediate/advanced levels.

Course outline

What is the course about?

To study the songs of Scandinavian composers in their original languages, i.e. Swedish, Norwegian and Danish.

What topics will we cover?

Musical interpretation of this repertoire with particular reference to the language and style.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- show a greater understanding of performing in the Scandinavian languages;
- perform at least three songs in a believable accent.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need:
- to be at intermediate level or above;
- to be used to preparing repertoire to perform in front of the class;
- an ability to read basic music notation (essential);
- to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Time allowed for a vocal warm-up.
In a workshop situation, using repertoire agreed by student and tutor.
Demonstration, discussion and some lectures.
At least one song in each language should be prepared before the course starts.
You are expected to practise for a minimum of one hour daily.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Notebook, pencil and sheet music, including extra copies for accompanist and tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
