Course outline

What is the course about?

For students who want to continue learning to sight-sing, using the sol-fa method, in a confidence-building environment.

What topics will we cover?

Music notation as necessary
The Sol-fa method of sight-singing.
Musicianship as it relates to aural awareness and to basic notation.
You will be given advice on how to practise, and will be expected to do homework.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Feel more confident singing in class and outside
Sight read both the melody and/or the harmony line of a part song
Recognise major and minor chords
Demonstrate a greater familiarity with musical notation and be more aurally aware.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For singers of all vocal technical levels who are already familiar with basic notation and who want to improve their ability to sing a melody at sight
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Singing exercises and part songs mainly in the group context.
Some singing individually.
You will be encouraged to give as well as receive feedback.
Discussion arising from work in progress.
You are encouraged to practise for a minimum of 20 minutes daily.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Notebook, pencil, folder and sheet music as required. You are encouraged to borrow materials from the City Lit learning centre, situated on the mezzanine level.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be advised on which course to progress to.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

Vocal Musicianship or a solo singing or choral singing class.
