Course outline

What is the course about?

Singing as a performing art, so the emphasis will be on the overall performance.

What topics will we cover?

Vocal exercises and guidance on technical improvement with reference to vocal colour and tone.
Broadening of individual repertoire and guidance on its suitability.
The art of communicating with an audience.
Help with constructive criticism in order to gain a better understanding of the voice.
In-depth study of the chosen repertoire, including the importance of text, musical structure and stylistic considerations.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Competently perform at least three songs from the studied repertoire from memory;
Choose suitable repertoire and show a more varied vocal ability;
Demonstrate a greater depth of understanding of the works studied;
Show improved listening skills and aural perceptiveness;
Show a more independent capacity to make telling and significant interpretative decisions by placing songs in a stylistic and historical context.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You must have had a minimum of five years' individual tuition. The ability to read music is essential, but this does not mean fluent sight-singing.
You must also be able to learn and present songs from memory on a regular basis.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
NB Entry to this level is by audition.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Time allowed for a physical and vocal warm-up.
Practical workshop format with discussion arising out of work in progress, allowing tutor and student interaction and the exchange of ideas.
You will be expected to experiment with repertoire and to present it in class already prepared.
Repertoire will be directed by the tutor for the most part and may include a variety of styles.
Demonstration and lecture.
You will be expected to practise for a minimum of one hour daily.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Note book and pencil, sheet music as required and perhaps a course book if required. You are encouraged to use the City Lit learning centre situated on the mezzanine level.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You need to arrange an audition time with the music office (see above).

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be advised on how to progress. There will be an end-of-year concert from which you will get further feedback.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Either a repetition of the course, any other singing workshop or City Opera.
