Course outline

What is the course about?

Singing as a disciplined craft and as a performing art; the emphasis will be on the overall performance i.e. vocal and platform technique.

What topics will we cover?

Vocal exercises and guidance on technical improvement, with reference to vocal colour and tone.
Experimentation with repertoire and guidance on its suitability for either auditions or recital work.
The art of communicating with an audience.
Help with constructive criticism in order to gain a better understanding of the voice.
In-depth study of the chosen repertoire, including the importance of text, musical structure and stylistic considerations.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Have more independent capacity to make telling and significant interpretative decisions by placing songs in a stylistic and historical context
Choose suitable repertoire with an increased knowledge and technical ability
Show an enhanced understanding of the works studied
Show improved listening skills and aural perceptiveness
Demonstrate the importance of the singer as an all round performer, combining artistry, platform technique, musical intelligence and vocal technique.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need to have a settled vocal technique.
You must either already be or intend to become a professional singer.
An ability to read music is essential however sight singing is not required
You must be able to present repertoire from memory on a regular basis.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
Entry to this level is by audition.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Time allowed for a physical and vocal warm-up.
Practical workshop format with discussion arising out of work in progress, allowing tutor and student interaction and the exchange of ideas.
You will be expected to experiment with repertoire and to present it in class already prepared.
Repertoire will be directed by the tutor for the most part and may include a variety of styles but you will have some opportunity to experiment with your own choices
Demonstration and lecture.
You will also be encouraged to perform in class concerts and in recital situations where possible.
You will be expected to practise for a minimum of one hour daily.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Note book and pencil, sheet music as required. You are encouraged to use the City Lit learning centre situated on the mezzanine level.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You need to arrange an audition time with the music office (see above).

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be advised on how to progress. There will be an end-of-year concert from which you will get further feedback.
