What is the course about?

Further study in the workshop situation, to broaden your repertoire and further develop your vocal and performing skills so they can be used in a more flexible and artistic manner.
To encourage you to work in more detail, achieving a greater understanding of your art.
We will focus on singing as a performing art, so the emphasis will be on the overall performance.

What topics will we cover?

Vocal and physical exercises.
Guidance on technical improvement with reference to vocal colour and tone.
Broadening of your individual repertoire and guidance on its suitability.
Communicating with an audience.
Help with constructive criticism in order to gain a better understanding of the voice.
In-depth study of the chosen repertoire.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Competently perform songs from the studied repertoire from memory.
Choose more suitable repertoire.
Show a variety of tone and colour in your singing.
Show an enhanced understanding of the works studied.
Show an improvement in listening skills and aural perceptiveness.
Critically evaluate vocal and performance technique.in yourself and others.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need:
to have a reasonably stable vocal technique, having completed either the City Lit foundation levels to intermediate 1 or equivalent, i.e. four years' individual tuition;
to be confident singing in front of the class and to have the ability to learn repertoire from memory regularly
a general understanding of musical notation, and an ability to read music. Sight-singing not necessary
an ability to sing in a variety of languages including English, French, German and Italian;
to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Time allowed for physical and vocal warm-up.
Group work, discussion and exchange of ideas/suggestions between tutor and class members.
Demonstration and lecture.
You will be expected to experiment with repertoire and to present it in class already prepared.
Repertoire will be introduced for the most part by the tutor, but students will have some opportunity to experiment with their own choices.
You will be expected to practise for a minimum of one hour daily.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Note book and pencil, sheet music as required and perhaps a course book if required. You are encouraged to use the City Lit learning centre situated on the mezzanine level.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be an end-of-year concert from which you will get further feedback.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

Depending on progress, a repetition of the course, progression to 'Working towards performance' or another suitable singing workshop.
