Course outline

What is the course about?

The string quartet player experiences at first hand the work of the composer. Musicianship is developed by sustaining an independent line, which interacts with that of other players whilst bringing the music to life.

What topics will we cover?

- A particular movement is studied in depth each term
- Other string quartet repertoire: classical, romantic or 20th Century
- The groups have the opportunity to choose their own repertoire.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Better understand the string quartet repertoire
- Demonstrate a greater understanding of musical style
- Demonstrate more confidence in your technical ability
- Interact more sensitively with other musicians
- Demonstrate imaginative and interpretive skills
- Demonstrate effective rehearsal and practice skills
- Perform in front of others with a degree of confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need technical ability of at least Grade 6, a good sense of rhythm and reasonable sight reading ability.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
You will need to be able to sight-read the appropriate part of a Haydn String Quartet.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

String quartets are formed at the beginning of the term, with occasional adjustments. The tutor visits each quartet during the session, ensuring that students receive specific advice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Players should bring their instruments and, where possible, music. The City Lit has a music library, which includes string quartet music and other chamber music.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Players can perform to each other at the end of each term.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

A players musical life is enriched by this course and by the opportunity to meet other string quartet players, who then often meet in their homes or on summer courses; you may also wish to continue with String quartets by repeating the course.
