You will be supported in developing an independent, creative photographic project. You may already be working on ideas that would benefit from being developed further, or you may simply want to begin from scratch. The emphasis will be on content, ideas, experimentation and achievement using appropriate formats.
During the course you will be encouraged to think about photography as a broad set of practices with specific goals and languages. Traditional and more experimental photographic practices, from fine art photography to documentary and multimedia storytelling, will be discussed. You will also think about photography in relation to artistic fields such as sculpture, installation art and the moving image. You will be encouraged to experiment across disciplines.
- plan and develop creative ideas, informed by knowledge of various strands of photography
- present a body of photographic work or a final individual piece that fulfills your brief
- discover a new way of working that leads into a more long-term project that you will be able to develop further yourself.
The course is suited for people who are able to take photographs independently and have some understanding of how to use the manual settings of a camera, as well as some notions of lighting.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussions. You should be able to use numbers and be able to undertake simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be taught via illustrated lectures, workshops, group and individual tutorials. You will undertake group workshops and discussions during the sessions, and individual practical projects outside the class.
You will be expected to cover the costs of the materials you use.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
