In this course you will learn about digital photography, how to use the basic functions of your digital camera and how to create digital images from your existing photographic prints, or transparencies.
You will be introduced to the basic tools of Photoshop (the industry standard image manipulation programme) and learn to use some of its tools to enhance your image.
You will be working on Mac computers.
* Bring your digital camera, if you have one, to your first class.
- Digital cameras: how to use the basic functions of your camera, technical issues, importing images from your camera to the computer
- Flatbed and slide scanners: turn your conventional photographic images, negatives, slides into digital ones
- Using some of the basic tools of Photoshop for adjusting and improving your images such as cropping, rotating, tone and colour adjustment and sharpening.
- Preparing images for email and/or web.
- understand what digital images are, and some of the possibilities that digital photography and Photoshop provide for image creation, manipulation and processing
- Use the basic functions of your own digital camera
- import digital images from your camera to the computer
- understand the use of Flatbed and slide scanners to turn your conventional photographic images, and slides into digital ones
-Use some of the basic tools of Photoshop to enhance your image
- be able to save your images effectively.
This course is at an introductory level and for beginners. You do not need to have any knowledge of photoshop but you are expected to have a basic knowledge of using computers. If you have a digital camera you should bring it with you, otherwise we will supply you with one.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through structured talks, lectures, demonstrations and practical work. Each student will have their own computer workstation which is used for practical work, and access to good quality scanners and printers. The digital arts studio also uses a computer projector for teaching and to view work by. All work is done at your own pace and follows an easily understood structure.
If you have little experience in using Macs we offer short courses on using Apple Mac computers for beginners and using Apple Macs for experienced PC users.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
