Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn how to use your digital camera to take photographs and learn the basics of Photoshop to adjust, improve and print your images. Turn your prints, negatives and slides taken with a conventional camera into digital images.

There will be a number of practical sessions using digital cameras to look at broad topics including portraiture, still life and close-up, and landscape and building photography. There will be access to digital cameras during these sessions if you do not have one.

What topics will we cover?

• Digital cameras: how to use your camera, technical issues, loading images to computer
• Practical photography sessions looking at photographing people, buildings, and still life.
• An introduction to Apple Mac computers and Photoshop.
• Using the basic tools of Photoshop for adjusting and improving your images such as cropping, rotating, tone and colour adjustment and sharpening.
• Flatbed and slide scanners: turn your conventional photographic images,
negatives, slides into digital ones
• Printing using inkjet and laser printers.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• The ability to use your own digital camera including using the flash and macro settings.
• How to scan and digitise your own prints, transparencies and negatives.
• How to use Photoshop to crop, rotate, alter tone and colour and improve apparent sharpness of your prints
• Knowledge and some practical experience of making prints of your digital images and storing them on CD or memory stick.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need only basic knowledge of computers and very basic knowledge of taking pictures would be useful. You will have access to up-to-date professional facilities and industry standard software. This is an introductory course and starts by assuming you know little about Photoshop and progresses from there.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through a carefully structured programme of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, practical guidance notes, and through work on your own images. The Digital Arts Studio also uses a computer projector for step by step demonstrations. You can use existing negatives and prints as source material, or take photographs with digital cameras, or conventional film on this course. Time will be divided roughly 50:50 between lectures/exercises and practical work. Personal input is essential to understanding the techniques shown in lectures. All work is done at your own pace and follows an easily understood structure.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring in your digital camera (if you have one) and some images to your first class – either on CD/DVD, memory stick or as negatives, slides or prints.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
