Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn how to use your digital camera to take photographs and learn the basics of Photoshop (the industry standard image manipulation programme) to adjust, improve and print your images. Turn your prints, negatives and slides taken with a conventional camera into digital images. You will learn how to make good quality colour prints from your work and prepare images for the web or email.
There will be a number of practical sessions using digital cameras to look at broad topics which will show you how to use the many settings on your camera including aperture, shutter speed and ISO. There will be access to digital cameras during these sessions if you do not have one.
* Please note that all computer work will be done on Macintosh computers.
* Bring your digital camera, if you have one, to your first class.

What topics will we cover?

- How to use your digital camera: including aperture, shutter speed and ISO
- Importing digital images from your camera to the computer
- Using Photoshop for adjusting and improving your images such as cropping, rotating, tone and colour adjustment and sharpening.
- Flatbed and slide scanners: turn your conventional photographic images, negatives, slides into digital ones
- Preparing images for email and/or web
- Printing using inkjet printers.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use the aperture/shutter priority settings, flash and macro settings on your camera
- import digital images from your camera to the computer
- Use Photoshop to adjust and improve your images
- Scan a print, transparencies and/or negative to turn it into a digital image
- print a digital image using an inkjet printer.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is at an introductory level and for beginners. You do not need to have any knowledge of Photoshop but you are expected to have a basic knowledge of using computers. If you have a digital camera you should bring it with you, otherwise we will supply you with one. You will have access to up-to-date professional facilities and industry standard software.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through structured talks and lectures, demonstrations and practical work. Each student will have their own computer workstation which is used for practical work, and access to good quality scanners and printers. All work is done at your own pace and follows an easily understood structure.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring in your camera and some images to your first class – either on CD/DVD, memory stick or on your camera.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
