How to use your camera in a technically competent and visually interesting way. How you might use photography to capture the true character of people in a more creative form, using different lighting, camera settings and composition.
The basic mechanics of photography, including choice of digital camera and lenses, exposure, shutter speed and aperture settings, and depth of field. Portraiture and photographing people. Composition, lighting and ethical considerations.
- Produce photographs demonstrating technical and theoretical understanding
- Produce visually interesting photographs
- Use manual functions on your camera with confidence
- Have a better understanding of digital cameras/lenses and how to choose between them.
No previous knowledge required. For complete beginners or anyone needing a technical refresher. You must have manual functions on their camera (i.e be able to change aperture and shutter speed settings).
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Lectures and analysis using a laptop and overhead projector. Practical demonstrations, exercises and projects. Discussion and individual tutoring as well as group work. Looking at project photographs produced during the course.
Please bring a digital camera which has a manual setting and a tripod if you have one.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
