What is the course about?

This course is a great opportunity for you to:
- learn what a digital image is and why this might be a better option than film for your photography;
- understand about digital terminology and technique and see photo examples of digital photography in practice;
- ask questions about digital photography in general, and get advice about which type of camera and software might be most appropriate to buy, and why.

What topics will we cover?

What is digital photography and how do digital cameras work?
Which type of camera would be most appropriate for you to buy, and why?
What accessories or additional equipment would enhance your picture taking possibilities?
Where are the best places to buy cameras?
Travelling with a digital camera.
How to store your photographs permanently, possibilities for printing your work or sending it by email.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand the difference between types of digital camera
- Make an informed choice as to which would best suit your needs, and how you would go about purchasing the equipment
- Have some idea of how digital imaging and cameras work
- Know which additional items of photographic equipment might be useful
- Have some insight into the possibilities for getting your work printed, how it can be stored, and how you can send copies by email.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For those with no prior knowledge of digital cameras and associated equipment.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Illustrated lectures, demonstrations, discussion. Through handouts and practical examination of equipment available and the results that can be achieved.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will discuss your progress with you, and what you want to get from the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
