Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is intended to give you a comprehensive knowledge of how to correctly Catalogue, file, name, caption and archive your digital photos to ensure that you can continue to use, locate and enjoy your images for years to come.

What topics will we cover?

- Ingesting - importing image files from your camera
- Captioning and key wording
- Archive structure and preventing loss of images
- Digital asset management software
- How to monetise your archive (create an income from your images)
- Aperture and Lightroom - one stop digital asset management systems.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand how best to organise a large picture library
- Understand the key principals and techniques for accurate captioning and key wording
- Know how to reduce the risk of losing your digital images due to unforeseen circumstances
- Understand what Lightroom and Aperture offer as an all-encompassing digital asset management system.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner’s class. Students should be computer literate at a basic level and have control of the functions of their cameras. Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, not PCs, although all the software used on this course is cross platform. If you have never used an apple computer before, you might find our course ‘An introduction to Apple computers’ that run each term of benefit, prior to enrolling on this course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through a structured programme of lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises and image based discussions. The photography studio uses a computer projector for presentations and viewing of images. Each student will have their own Apple Mac computer to work on.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs associated with this course; you are advised to bring a note pad and pen.
You are encouraged to bring some image files on a memory stick, CD, DVD, external hard drive or camera card. Some example images will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
