Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn how to use Aperture for importing, editing, keywording and exporting your images for different uses including print and web, as well as how it can be used for comprehensive digital asset management. This course will give you a solid grounding in how to use Aperture in an effective digital workflow.

** Please note that this is an Apple Mac only program and is not available for PC users.

What topics will we cover?

- Introduction to Aperture and the interface
- Setting up Aperture
- Importing images
- Selecting, ranking and key wording images
- Editing images
- Exporting images for different uses including print and web
- Increasing productivity through plugins and presets.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Set up and maintain Aperture and an Aperture library
- Understand how to select and rank images
- Edit for quality accuracy and consistency, using both internal and external image editors
- Batch edit including being able to set up and use presets to reduce processing time
- Search the Library quickly for images using different techniques
- Accurately and consistently keyword and caption images
- Print images with text overlay
- Securely archive and back up Aperture library's and vaults.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner’s class. Students should be computer literate at a basic level and have control of the functions of their cameras. Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, as the Aperture software is only available on the Apple Mac OS system. If you have never used a computer before, you might find our course ‘An introduction to Apple computers’ that run each term.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through a structured programme of lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises and image based discussions. The photography studio uses a computer projector for presentations and viewing of images. Each student will have their own computer to work on.

City Lit has a purpose-built digital suite equipped with Apple Mac computers where visual arts computer courses are taught. Using projector demonstrations, handouts and hands-on experience with tutor support, a sound grounding in Aperture is taught.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You should bring some images on an external hard disk or memory stick for use in lessons and you are encouraged to take notes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
