Course outline

What is the course about?

If you are used to using Windows but have never used Macs, this course is for you. It will give you an overview of using the Apple Mac computer operating system and introduce you to setting system preferences, navigating files and folders, opening applications and creating, saving and accessing files. It is an excellent preparation for using advanced digital art applications on Macs more effectively.
In this practical course you will be encouraged to ask questions and engage in practical exercises.

What topics will we cover?

An overview of the anatomy of a Mac and the Mac operating system and desktop. You will gain an understanding of how to find and open applications and create, save and access files. You will learn how to use and customise the dock and use system preferences to control the use of devices on your Mac. You will also apply this knowledge to the use of some specific software applications.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand the structure and main characteristics of the Mac operating system
- change the controls, use windows, and create, save and archive documents
- understand the use of the dock and the finder window.
- be able to apply this knowledge to the effective use of some specific software applications.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed to cater for those who have had no experience in using computers or want to learn about the Apple Mac, having previously used Windows.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course structure consists of practical exercises, short lectures and demonstrations.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Notes and handouts will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Having sampled and practised the basic skills necessary to work on an Apple Mac, there is a range of longer courses at City Lit that specialise in image manipulation, page layout, the web, editing digital video, interactive multimedia, digital photography, Photoshop and animation. These will allow you to build on your newly acquired skills and knowledge. Open access sessions in the digital arts studio also provide a good opportunity to revise and expand on what you have already achieved.
