Course outline

What is the course about?

Practical & Theoretical. Looking at differing approaches to photographing people, from studio portrait to street documentary. Increasing confidence in photographing people and explore one’s own parameters. Learning about lighting and posing.

What topics will we cover?

Portraiture on location & in the studio; photo reportage/documentary; use of natural light, lighting conventions and experimental lighting; photo-diary project.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Produce a varied selection of photographs of people, using many different settings and lighting conditions.
Gain confidence in dealing with people as a photographer.
Be inspired and have a greater understanding of the purpose of picture taking.
Have an increased ability to criticise own work and pursue own interests.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For any level, although students should have use and knowledge of a 35mm S.L.R camera (film or digital) or equivalent (i.e. not point and shoot). It is an advantage if students have completed a beginner’s course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Emphasis on practical work using natural and artificial lighting, indoors and outdoors. Looking at slides and found photographs. Feedback on own and each other’s work. Discussions and group work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

If using film you will need to eventually buy up to 3 rolls, and processing - students may use colour or black & white. Digital users will need to pay for prints from the camera memory card. Please bring scrapbook to class (just a cheap one). Bring 35mm SLR camera (film or digital) or equivalent. Bring a tripod if you have one but it is not essential.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. By bringing in own photographs from the course and discussing results. By trying new things and doing on going diary project throughout course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

A more advanced photography class at the City Lit.
